Facing Your Fears

Take Control of Your Fears

We all live in our minds, with our thoughts and imaginations.  Our fears real or imagined have a profound effect on who we are.  My focus for writing this article is to make every attempt to control what goes through my mind and catch thoughts that does not serve me, especially the ones that are fear based.

“We tiptoe through life hoping to safely make it to death.” Unknown

When I think about my fears, I concentrate on the ones that have an effect on the quality of my life.  Yes, I have a fear of handling snakes, cave diving at night or racing in a speed boat.  These are activities I do not intend to ever, engage in.

I had a fear of flying and this had a profound effect on how I move about this planet.  That fear had to go.  Ok, so I took Xanax the first few times I flew on an airplane.  It worked, I was calm and drowsy.

I did not go near the water when at a pool or the beach.  I had a fear of drowning.    This had a devastating effect on my pleasure around water.

I decided to change this fear into something positive.  I took swim lessons as an adult.  I now swim two or three times a week, and I swim exceptionally well.

Public speaking was my worst fear.  I stood up and my shaky knees sat me back down. My heart would race, my breathing was rapid and I had an upset stomach.  I could not utter a word.

I think back on those times and giggle, well, laugh out loud.   I started by standing and introducing myself when asked.  I would also speak at small gatherings.  One or two people, really.

Eventually, I could speak in front of many and get nervous only a bit.  I am not sure that ever passes.

Recognize your fears, and if they have an effect on how you choose to live your life, do something about them.

There are so many ways to do away with your fears.  Consider one or more of these:

  •  Meditation
  • Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT)
  • Affirmations
  • Positive self-talk
  • Mantras
  • Therapy

“Do the thing you fear and the death of fear is certain.”
— Ralph Waldo Emerson

Remember to  look at fears you have walked through in the past and do not think about anything fear based in bed.

Most of our fears are future based in our thoughts.  Stay present.  When you think about your future concentrate on how you want it to be and stay in that space.

Make a decision not to be afraid or apprehensive about anything or any object that minimize and interfere with the enjoyment of your life.

Share with us some of the ways you have conquered your fears.  I promise it will help someone.

Take control!

Honor yourself!
