At any given time, you may not realize you are either feeling expansive or contracted.
What do I mean by this? When you are in an expansive state, you are open, relaxed, and cheerful. The opposite side is to be contacted.
You know how that feels because you have been there, or maybe you are there now. You feel tight, unhappy, stressed, sad, angry, and fearful.
There are degrees of both feelings of being. If you are uptight, taking a few deep breaths can alter your state to relaxed.
There are times it is not easy to change your state from contracted to expansive.
At times like this, you may have to go with your feelings and walk through the problem that is keeping you in an undesirable state, knowing there is light on the other side. (Try box breathing to feel better.)
This I know for a fact because I have been there.
How can you change your contracted state of being too expansive, open, and satisfied? You do it with your mind. You change your breathing and thinking.
You breathe in and out. Box Breathing is the easiest way to become open. It is used by the United States Navy SEALs and by stressed-out people around the globe.
- Breathe in, counting to four slowly.
- Feel the air enter your lungs. Hold your breath for 4 seconds. Try to avoid inhaling or exhaling for 4 seconds.
- Slowly exhale through your mouth for 4 seconds.
- Repeat steps 1 to 3 until you feel re-centered.
Understanding how to navigate between the two states is important to your well-being. When you are feeling uptight during your day, think quickly about what you are thinking about. Your feelings follow your thoughts.
Flip your thoughts with a mantra, and perform the box breathing technique and get on with your life in a joyful and healthy way.
